Norm Duke Wins U.S. Open

Norm Duke Wins U.S. Open

The U.S. Open took place this past week, concluding on Sunday, February 27, 2011. This event is held on the toughest of all of the PBA patterns, the flat U.S. Open pattern. The difficulty of this pattern was shown in the TV finals this weekend.

The first match had two former Collegiate All-Americans and Bowlers of the Year at Saginaw Valley State University in Bill O’Neill and Dan MacLelland. O’Neill was able to take over this match early and won decisively, 204-150. O’Neill went on to bowl against Ryan Shafer in the last Saturday night match. In a close match, Shafer was able to win, 193-183, as O’Neill left a split in the 10th frame. Shafer moved on to bowl against Mika Koivuniemi in the first Sunday match. Both bowlers scored well, but Mika was able to pull ahead and win the match, 236-222, and advance to the semifinals against Tommy Jones. Mika Koivuniemi continued to bowl well, as Jones struggled, and won the match, 241-158.

Mika Koivuniemi went on to face tournament leader Norm Duke in the finals. In a close match that went back and forth, it came down to the 10th frame. Norm Duke threw all strikes in the 9th and 10th frames to force Mika to mark in the 10th. Mika threw a great shot in the 10th, but left a 10 pin. All that was left was to cover the spare and get 8 pins on the fill ball. Off his hand Mika knew he had made a bad shot, as the ball fell into the gutter in front of the 10 pin. Norm Duke had won the match, 225-216, and the tournament.

After the match was over, both bowlers were visibly sick to their stomachs. As Norm Duke was happy to win, his feelings of sympathy toward Mika Koivuniemi strongly overpowered his happiness.

“I sat there stunned, shocked,” Duke said. “I knew I had just won the U.S. Open, but at that moment, my only thought was Mika had just lost. I was just like a fan watching in the living room. How could you not feel badly for him.”

“Mika will be fine, he’ll bounce back. He’s going to be our Player of the Year,” Duke said. “But he’ll never forget that one.”

In winning the U.S. Open, Norm Duke has won his 34th career PBA title and his 7th career PBA Major title.

The USBC Masters TV finals started with Mika Koivuniemi bowling against Mike DeVaney. Mika continued to bowl great, as he has done all season and won the match. This put Mika in the semifinals against the #2 bowler, Tom Hess. Tommy Hess bowled a great match and was able to defeat Mika Koivuniemi to move onto the finals against #1 bowler Jack Jurek. The finals match went back and forth between the two bowlers, with Hess being victorious in the end. By winning the USBC Masters, Hess takes home the first prize of $50,000.

The PBA Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship took place this past week, at AMF Thruway Lanes in Cheektowaga, New York. The four TV finalists included Jason Couch, Tom Smallwood, Parker Bohn III, and Ryan Ciminelli. The first stepladder match had Parker Bohn III up against Tom Smallwood. Parker won a close match, 201-197, and advanced to face Ryan Ciminelli. In another close match, Bohn was able to win, 213-207, and advance to the final match against Jason Couch. Parker was not able to continue his success, and bowed out as Jason Couch overpowered him with a 219 game to beat Parker’s 175.

In winning the Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship, Couch took home the $20,000 first prize and his 16th career PBA title. This title ended Couch’s 4 year drought and earns him a continuation on his exemption.

Let's Talk Bowling : Stance, Ball Position, Approach and Delivery.

Let's Talk Bowling: Stance, Ball Position, Approach and Delivery.

Stance

  • Head Position
    • head up. looking straight ahead. shoulder square to the target.
  • Elbow and Arm Position
    • right arm bent, holding the ball at chest height. elbow is tucked into the body.
  • Weight Shift
    • ensure weight is properly distributed so that the bowler is well balanced in the stance.
  • Shoulder Position
    • shoulders are parallel with the foul line.
    • feel as if you could balance a cup of coffee on shoulders.
  • Toe position
    • have feet pointed at target and walk in a straight line towards the target.
  • Eye position on the target
  • Grip
    • hold the ball by the tips of the fingers and thumb. a small pocket of air in the palm of the hand should be apparent.
    • ball should be chest high in the right hand, supported by the left hand.

Ball Position

  • There are 3 positions depending on the speed to the foul line
    • if you're fast, hold the ball at knee height.
    • if you have medium speed, hold it at waist height.
    • if you're slow, hold it at shoulder height.

Approach

  • Pushaway
    • hands and left foot begin to move simultaneously.
    • ball is pushed slightly upward and away from the body, upper body is titled forward.
    • as first step is nearing completion, left hand leaves ball and extends for balance.
    • right arm pushes forward to full extension of the pushaway.
    • right arm and ball begin the downward motion which is the beginning of the backswing.
  • Straight Line
    • check the approach from the starting position to the finishing position.
    • ensure that the bowler relates to each position, lines up accordingly and maintains a straight line through.
  • Backswing
    • ball should be start chest high and the weight of the ball coupled with the pendulum swing will automatically control the proper height.
    • wrists locked.
    • keep the arm in close to the body utilizing the pendulum swing. this will enable the ball to swing in a straight path.
  • Slide
    • this is the completion of the final step in the approach.
    • the length of the slide is determined by the speed of the bowler’s approach.

Delivery

  • Toe Position
    • towards target.
  • Shoulder Position
    • bowler maintains shoulder and head in a level position.
  • Eye Position
    • keep eyes focused on the target spot.

Bowling Tips

1) Visualize. If you're a golfer, you'll know what I mean when I say "be the ball". I'm not talking about that extra second you think as you're about to maybe throw a third strike. Visualize every shot as you will see it before it happens. Be the ball, picture the target, the release, and the reaction.

2) Get down to the lane. When you setup for your shot you want to be comfortable with the ball you're about to throw down the lane. It doesn't hurt to be a little more tucked in and down when you're preparing for your shot.

3) Load up. If you want to improve your game and you don't own a balling ball, stop reading and go to the pro-shop, get shoes too if you don't have those. It's not about having the latest technology in bowling equipment, it's about that same feeling you get when you put on your pair of shoes, or fit your hand in your ball. Knowing that alone will improve your game.

I've got lots more bowling tips here and more links on the left menu.

The best bowling tip for a free arm swing is keeping your grip relaxed in the ball. Don't squeeze fingers or thumb, keep them relaxed, especially the thumb. To have a relaxed thumb in the ball your ball has to be fitted and drilled correctly. If your thumb hole feels loose it will cause you to squeeze the ball and then muscle your swing. Inserts in the thumb and finger holes can help give you a more secure fit. If you have a large webbing at the base of your thumb adding extra bevel around the top of the thumb hole will give you a deeper secure fit. The free arm swing will enable you to swing the ball effortlessly from the shoulder.

The 45 Degree Hand Position
This is the easiest and most natural hand position to use. In the 45 degree hand position the hand is partially under and partially to the side of the ball with the tips of both pinky-s touching. Non bowling hand supports ball. This promotes a free arm swing.

Use Your Lower Body Leverage
On the last step bend your knee to get down lower to the lane and slide your foot straight towards the foul line making sure it does not turn. Think of it as sliding into a deep knee bend. Counter balance your body by moving your non-sliding leg side ways to the opposite side of your bowling arm. Keep your upper body fairly erect as you get down low to the foul line.

Finish Up Close To The Foul Line
You should be about six inches from the foul line at the end of the delivery to have an optimal release. In an optimal release the ball is lofted a small distance over the foul line before it makes contact with the lane. This gets the ball further down the lane conserving energy when it hits the pins. If you are finishing up too far away from the foul line move closer in during the stance.

Relax Thumb, Come Through Ball
Don't try to over lift or turn the bowling ball during the release. It will only cause muscling and misdirection of your arm swing. Instead just relax your thumb and come cleanly through the ball as you release it and follow through, keep your eyes focused on your target. For a strong release you need good lower body leverage and you also need to finish up close to the foul line.

Bowling Is A Mental Game
Analyze your delivery and think about what you are doing when you practice. Feel your good shots as you make them and imprint it into your mind so you can repeat them. Use visualization to practice off the lanes in your mind making perfect shots.

Try The Drop Away Method
The drop away replaces the push away. In the drop away method hold the ball high up in the stance at shoulder height and take a small first step but don't move the ball (no push away). Instead just let the ball drop down into the swing on the second step. If this feels awkward to you try sliding your foot out on the first step until you get used to it.

Shoe Sliding Problems (Sticking)
If you have trouble sliding buy a Dexter red slide sole and some velcro self sticking fastener. Cut red slide sole and velcro self sticking fastener the same size as rubber heel on slide shoe. Paste velcro fastener on rubber heal and fasten red slide sole.

Develop Your Own Bowling Style
There is no set way that bowlers bowl and anything can work when a bowler repeats the same exact movements enough. Do what feels relaxing and the most natural to you. Developing your own bowling style will improve your game and scores.

Watch Professional Bowlers On TV
Watch the professional bowlers on television and record them with your VCR. Play back the tape and watch in slow motion. Study their technique to improve your own game. Women pros are great to watch because they rely on finesse over power.

35TH ASTRO 35th MALAYSIAN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

19TH MARCH 2011

KANG & ZANDRA ARE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

Johor’s Kang Bo Long and Selangor’s Zandra Aziela Ibrahim Hakimi, first time winners of the 35th Astro Malaysian National Championship had different reasons for their triumph at the Sunway Mega Lanes this afternoon.

Kang went into the stepladder final as the challenger to play Kuala Lumpur’s Yusuf Abdul Raof who was the top seed and defeated him over two games – 226-176; 244-191.

Zandra, on the other hand, who was the top in the final, had to play in the deciding second game to beat challenger from Sarawak’ Dayang Khairuniza Dhiyana 205-212; 195-179.

Kang_Bo_Long_recieving_the_Natioinal_Champion_trophies_from_MTBC_President_Dato_Dr_NathanKang, was out to prove that he still deserves a place in the national team setup after having been left out because of a decision by the National Sports Council (NSC) to disband the national back-up squad as part of their cost cutting measures.

In fact, Yusuf too was in the back-squad, but is still with the national team setup as he dropped to the youth squad as he was only 19 still eligible to be in the youth Under-21 squad which was still supported by NSC.

Kang, 25, was obviously over aged and was not eligible for the youth squad and not good enough for the national squad.

“I was really disappointed when the back-up squad was disbanded and was not good enough to make the national squad,” said Kang who hails from Johor but works in the Pro Shop at the KL Mega Lanes in Endah Parade.

“I was determined to prove myself in the national championship with the hope that I will be reconsidered for a place in the national team or for the back-up squad to be re-established.

“It was a do-or-die mission for me and I am glad that it all worked out well for me. I was a little nervous when I was up against Adrian as he was an experienced and talented bowler. But I stayed focussed on my goal and did well.

Malaysian_National_Champion_Kang_Bo_Long“As for the final, I went in confident to beat Yusuf, although it had to take me two games to defeat him as the challenger,” said Kang who won RM7, 000 for his title.

“It really feels great to have won the National title for the first time and just hope that my victory will pave the way for me to be with the national setup again.”

Yusuf on losing in the final despite being top seed said that he was nervous.

“Kang was more composed and experienced. I tried my best, but I just could not get my game going. I am still happy that I made the final,” said Yusuf.

Zandra was delighted that she because a first time winner after trying for so many times and despite having won the Malaysian Open title in 2007 and finishing runners-up in 2008.

“This is my first I qualified for the National Open final and I am elated that I won it finally. Besides, it is a great early birthday present for myself,” said Zandra who turns 25 on March 29.

“Dayang did well to give me a fright when she defeated me in the first game, but I was determined not to allow this chance to win the title slip by after finally having made the final.

“With victory, I hope that I will have a good year with the national team,” said Zandra who two bronzes medals (doubles and team) in the Interstate championship which ended on Friday.

Dayang on the other hand said that she tried her best, but experience saw Zandra edge her.

“I may not have won the title, but I am still happy that I qualified for the final despite being up against many experienced national players. I did well to win the first game against Zandra, but the lanes were drying up fast in the second and I had problems,” said Dayang who won three gold medals (All-events, Team and doubles) in the Interstate championship.
